Principles of Brain Compatible Learning

~INTELLIGENCE IS A FUNCTION OF EXPERIENCE and can be developed. IQ is not FIXED AT BIRTH.

~The Brain is a PARALLEL PROCESSOR. Both sides of the brain work together to sort and filter sensory information. UNDERSTANDING often occurs hours, weeks or months after the teaching/learning experience.

~The brain is a SOCIAL BRAIN and changes in response to engagement with others both academically and SOCIALLY.

~The search for meaning is INNATE and is driven by MEANINGFUL CONTENT and VALUES.

~LEARNING is the creation of powerful PATTERNS and PROGRAMS . The brain resists having isolated, unrelated pieces of information imposed upon it.

~Every brain is UNIQUELY ORGANIZED. It is shaped by experience. The differences express themselves in terms of learning styles, talents and multiple intelligences.

~DEVELOPMENTAL and GENDER differences impact learning. When forced to do things it’s not ready to do, the brain SHORT CIRCUITS to accomplish the task.

~What we learn is influenced and organized by EMOTIONS

~ANXIETY, PRESSURE and FEAR make it IMPOSSIBLE for neurons to send or receive desired signals.

~The EMOTIONAL CLIMATE of the classroom will determine whether or not some students will LEARN.

~ATTENTION, LEARNING AND MEMORY are driven by the EMOTIONAL STATE of the student.

~Learning involves both focused and peripheral ATTENTION. Peripheral signs and signals account for 90% of information absorbed by the brain.

~LONG TERM MEMORY is inexhaustible, and motivated by novelty, music and movement.

~The BODY - MIND connection is critical to LEARNING and MEMORY

~REAL LEARNING requires ACTIVE participation
