In Grade 1, students will …

 

RELIGION:

·       Know that the Church is God’s family

·       Name their parish, their pastor, and the Pope

·       Realize that God created the world and is always with us

·       Know that Jesus is the Son of God who saved us and is a model for us

·       Know that the Holy Spirit was sent by God on Pentecost

·       Be familiar with the symbols of Baptism and what they mean

·       Realize that Baptism gives us new life in Christ

·       Know that the Bible is the Word of God speaking to us today

·       Be familiar with some stories and people from the Bible

·       Know that God speaks through His word read at Mass

·       Know that the second part of the Mass prepares us to receive Jesus in Holy Communion

·       Be familiar with the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter

·       Pray the Our Father and Hail Mary, know what the rosary looks like, and experience praying the Stations of the Cross

 

 

LANGUAGE ARTS:

·       Blend two to four phonemes (sounds) into words

·       Demonstrate a growing stock of sight words

·       Create and use graphic organizers such as Venn Diagrams with teacher assistance, to demonstrate comprehension

·       Write simple stories with a beginning, a middle and an end

·       Print legibly and space letters, words and sentences appropriately

·       Spell high frequency words correctly

·       Use active listening skills

 

MATH:

·       Use 100’s chart to show understanding of place value

·       Recognize geometric shapes and structures in the environment

·       Read, interpret and construct charts and graphs as sources of information

·       Sort and classify objects by size, number and other properties

·       Extend patterns and describe the rule in words

·       Model, represent and explain addition as counting on and combining sets

·       Model, represent and explain subtraction as comparison, take-away and part to whole

 

SCIENCE:

·       Investigate a variety of ways to make things move and what causes them to change speed and direction

·       Investigate that water can change from solid to liquid and liquid to solid

·       Explore that organisms, including humans, have basic needs which include air, water, food and shelter

·       Explain that resources are things we get from the living and non-living environment

 

SOCIAL STUDIES:

·       Compare daily life of families in the past and present

·       Identify and describe physical and human features of places

·       Describe similarities and differences in the ways different cultures meet common human needs

·       Recognize and explain the importance of symbols and landmarks of the United States

·       Demonstrate citizenship traits

·       Display courtesy and respect for  others in group settings

 

ART:

·       Identify types of lines and shapes

·       Identify colors and textures that are same and different

·       Understand relationships such as in front of and behind; near and far

·       Identify a repeated pattern

·       Cooperate in group projects

·       Begin to explore drawing, painting, cutting, gluing, printmaking, and lettering

 

MUSIC:

·       Understand music reading skills and terms

·       Develop music performance skills

·       Learn singing games

·       Participate musically in the Liturgy

 

HEALTH:

·       Understand the Food Pyramid

·       Describe procedures to escape a fire

·       Understand how senses send and receive messages throughout the body

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

·       Be introduced to individual and dual sports

·       Learn the Christian behaviors of sportsmanship

·       Develop social/emotional skills including team play

 

TECHNOLOGY BENCHMARKS:

·       Use input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard) and output devices (e.g., monitor, printer) to successfully operate computers

·       Use appropriate terminology for computers (e.g., mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer)

·       Use developmentally appropriate resources for directed and independent learning  (e.g., inter-active books and other educational software)

FORMATIVE OUTCOMES
