In Grade 2, students will …

 

RELIGION:

·       Cherish life as a gift from God

·       Know that all people and creation deserve respect

·       Know that God gives us the freedom to choose

·       Know that we are responsible for our choices and their consequences

·       Define “virtue” as “a good habit” and know that we are called to live virtuous lives

·       Define sin as a selfish or unloving choice

·       Understand that our conscience helps us know what is right or wrong

·       Know the word “Sacrament” and name the seven Sacraments

·       Understand the essentials of the Sacrament of Reconciliation

·       Recite an Act of Contrition

·       Know more about the meaning of, and how to participate at, Mass

·       Know that the bread and wine at Mass become the body and blood of Jesus

·       Prepare to receive Jesus in Holy Communion for the first time

·       Know that the Bible is the word of God speaking to us today

·       Name the four Gospels

 

 

LANGUAGE ARTS:

·       Identify rhyming words with same and different spelling

·       Identify contractions and common abbreviations and connect them to whole words

Establish a purpose for reading

·       Answer literal, inferential and evaluative questions to demonstrate comprehension

·       Develop a purpose and audience for writing

·       Write stories that convey a clear message, include details, use vivid language and a logical sequence

·       Spell plurals and verb tenses correctly

 

MATH:

·       Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers from 100 - 1000

·       Recognize the attributes of length, volume, weight and time

·       Develop common referents for measures to make comparisons and estimates

·       Model, represent and explain addition as combining sets and counting

·       Model, represent and explain subtraction as comparison, take-away and part to whole

·       Create and extend patterns and describe the rule in words

 

SCIENCE:

·       Ask “how do you know” questions

·       Describe weather by measurable quantities such as temperature and precipitation

·       Explore how things make sounds

·       Compare the habitats of many different kinds of Ohio plants and animals

·       Predict how building something new might affect the environment

 

SOCIAL STUDIES:

·       Compare jobs people did to make a living in the past with jobs people do today

·       Identify the location of the state of Ohio, the United States and the continents and oceans on maps, globes and other geographic representations

·       Identify leaders such as mayor, governor and president and explain that they are elected by the people

 

ART:

·       See differences between kinds of shapes and lines

·       Recognize primary and secondary colors

·       Identify repeated, regular, and irregular patterns

·       Begin to understand the cultural origins of art

 

MUSIC:

·       Be introduced to music reading and terms

·       Develop music performance skills such as partner singing

·       Participate musically in the Liturgy

·       Explore music of other cultures

 

HEALTH:

·       Understand the need for proper food care

·       Identify feelings

·       Understand emotional needs of self and others

·       Understand the importance of nutrition, exercise, rest

·       Explain and demonstrate safety rules

·       Know precautions to take around strangers

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

·       Develop motor skills

·       Participate in movement, rhythmic activities, simple games, relays, singing games

·       Be introduced to team sports

·       Be introduced to the Christian behaviors of sportsmanship

·       Understand the importance of safety considerations

 

TECHNOLOGY BENCHMARKS:

·       Use input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard) and output devices (e.g., monitor, printer) to successfully operate computers
