In Grade 4, students will …

 

RELIGION:

·       Know the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching

·       Give examples of people who lived these principles

·       Apply some of these principles to their own lives

·       Realize that they are called to live a virtuous life

·       Know that the Theological Virtues are foundations for moral living

·       Know how to use their conscience to make correct moral decisions

·       Know the following moral guides:  the Two Great Commandments, the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, and the authority of the Church

·       Know the major divisions of the Bible, and where to locate the books of the Bible

·       Relate some of the stories of the Bible

·       Know the Infancy Narratives, some parables, miracles, some events in the Acts of the Apostles, and an overview of the Epistles

·       Use scripture as a basis for prayer and reflection

·       Locate significant biblical cities on a map

 

LANGUAGE ARTS:

·       Determine the meaning of unknown words by using a variety of context clues, including word, sentence and paragraph clues

·       Identify word origins to determine meaning of unknown words

·       Predict and support predictions using an awareness of vocabulary, text structures and familiar plot patterns

·       Identify examples of cause and effect

·       Explain how an author’s choice of words appeals to the senses and suggests mood

·       Organize writing with an introduction, body and resolution of plot, followed by a summary

·       Proofread writing and edit to improve conventions

·       Write legibly in cursive

·       Deliver formal and informal descriptive presentations

·       Demonstrate active listening skills

 

MATH:

·       Demonstrate fluency in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing

·       Analyze and solve multi-step problems using an organized approach

·       Determine the area and perimeter of rectangles

·       Explore what happens to measurements of a two-dimensional shape when the shape is changed

·       Explore congruence and similarity

·       Represent the idea of a variable as an unknown quantity using a letter or symbol

·       Express mathematical relationships as equations and inequalities

·       Represent data using tables and graphs

·       Understand and apply basic concepts of probability

·       Use range, median and mode to make comparisons about related sets of data

 

SCIENCE:

·       Identify the characteristics of simple physical change and simple chemical change

·       Explain that matter has different states and that each has distinct physical properties

·       Describe how wind, water and ice shape and reshape Earth’s surface

·       Classify common plants according to their characteristics

·       Describe, illustrate and evaluate the design process used to solve a problem

·       Record the results and data from an investigation and make a reasonable explanation

 

SOCIAL STUDIES:

·       Explore Ohio’s geography, history, government, and economy

·       Make timelines to show the order of important events in Ohio history

·       Use a linear scale to measure the distance between places on a map

·       Explain the importance of Ohio inventors

 

ART:

·       Identify neutral colors

·       Identify balance, structure, and decoration

·       Draw a person

·       Construct a collage

 

MUSIC:

·       Understand music reading skills and terms such as measures and accents

·       Participate musically in the Liturgy

·       Explore music of other cultures

 

HEALTH:

·       Understand the basic concept of disease

·       Know basic first-aid procedures

·       Understand the importance of a healthy diet

·       Understand the inherent dangers of guns

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

·       Participate in tumbling, apparatus work, conditioning exercises, individual and team sports, fitness, and wellness activities

·       Develop social/emotional skills including team play, positive social interaction, problem solving, acceptable display of emotion, and responsibility

 

TECHNOLOGY BENCHMARKS:

·       Be introduced to keyboarding techniques

·       Understand basic issues related to responsible use of technology

·       Use technology tools for writing, communication, and publishing

·       Use the Internet for research

FORMATIVE OUTCOMES
