In Grade 5, students will …

 

RELIGION:

·       Understand the Church as a sign of Christ’s presence among us

·       Know the role of bishops and archbishops in the church

·       Know the Laws/Precepts of the Church

·       Know what a martyr is and the lives of some martyrs

·       Know what ecumenism is

·       Be familiar with the Toledo Diocesan Mission of Accompaniment in Zimbabwe and the universal call to spread the Gospel

·       Understand how people enter the Church through the RCIA

·       Deepen their understanding of each of the Sacraments, their signs, symbols, and meanings

·       Realize that their Baptismal vows are a call to holiness

·       Know that some women and men take special vows as a fulfillment of their Baptismal vows; these are sisters, brothers, and priests

·       Know the names of some religious communities

·       Know the vestments, articles, liturgical roles, postures, etc., used during Mass

·       Deepen their knowledge of the Liturgical Year

·       Experience prayers of praise, thanksgiving, petition and sorrow, and realize the differences among them

·       Know the mysteries of the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross

 

LANGUAGE ARTS:

·       Summarize important information in written work

·       Use the elements of a book and search engines on the internet to access information

·       Use the five-stage writing process to develop a variety of forms of writing

·       Develop the skill of revising and editing an initial draft

·       Deliver presentations using clear diction and tone, change volume and speed to stress ideas

·       Locate sources and collect information from several sources

·       Define plagiarism and cite sources of information

 

MATH:

·       Use different forms of “one” to show how fractions are equal (18/24=9/12)

·       Recognize and identify perfect squares and their roots

·       Use order of operations, including parentheses to simplify problems

·       Create and understand the meaning of equations and inequalities to represent mathematical situations

·       Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze and evaluate data

·       Understand and apply basic concepts of probability

 

SCIENCE:

·       Describe the characteristics of the Earth and its orbit about the Sun

·       Trace the organization of simple food chains and food webs

·       Define temperature as the measure of thermal energy and describe the way it is measured

·       Describe that electrical current in a circuit can produce thermal energy, light, sound and/or magnetic forces

·       Observe the transmission, refraction and reflection of light and sound

 

SOCIAL STUDIES:

·       Explain how American Indians settled the continent

·       Explain why European countries explored and colonized North America

·       Use a map elements and coordinates to locate physical and human features of North America

·       Compare traditions and products of North American cultural groups

·       Identify the responsibilities of the branches of the U.S. government and explain why they are necessary

 

ART:

·       Identify complementary, transparent, translucent, and opaque colors

·       Identify symmetrical and asymmetrical balance

·       Paint with tempera and watercolor

 

MUSIC:

·       Understand and use music reading skills and terms

·       Develop music performance skills

·       Participate musically in the Liturgy

 

HEALTH:

·       Understand the stages of drug addiction

·       Focus on the development of life skills

·       Understand the differences between positive and negative peer pressure

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

·       Develop social/emotional skills including team play, positive social interaction, problem solving, acceptable display of emotion, and responsibility

·       Understand the importance of safety considerations when taking part in physical activities

 

TECHNOLOGY BENCHMARKS:

·       Develop proper keyboarding techniques

·       Understand basic issues related to responsible use of technology
