In Grade 6, students will …

 

RELIGION:

·       Know that the primary principle of Catholic Social Teaching is “The Life and Dignity of the Human Person”

·       Know the six other principles of Catholic Social Teaching

·       Be familiar with saints and holy people who exemplify the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching

·       Implement some of the principles in their own lives

·       Know that the mystery of the Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith

·       List some attributes of God

·       Know that Jesus is both God and man and is the fulfillment of the Old Testament covenant

·       Have some idea of the concepts of death, heaven, hell, and purgatory

·       Realize that the basic principle of morality is to do good and avoid evil

·       Learn to act morally and live a virtuous life because they have God’s life, (Grace) within them

·       Recognize qualities of saintliness in those living today

·       Differentiate between “literary form” and literal meaning

·       Know the major divisions, events, places, people, and lessons of the Old Testament

·       Know the church’s definition of “Tradition”

 

LANGUAGE ARTS:

·       Identify themes, patterns and symbols that recur in reading material from different eras and cultures

·       Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of spelling, grammar, mechanics, and usage when writing

·       Write stories that keep a clear focus and point of view and use sensory details and dialogue to develop plot, characters and a specific setting

 

MATH:

·       Work flexibly with fractions, decimals and percents to solve problems

·       Compare and order fractions, decimals and percents efficiently and find locations on a number line

·       Decompose and recompose whole numbers using factors and exponents

·       Identify, use and perform operations with both metric and standard measurement

·       Define and identify types of angles

·       Classify and describe two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometric figures and objects using their properties

·       Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic logic

·       Formulate questions that can be answered with data

 

 

SCIENCE:

·       Choose the appropriate tools or instruments and relevant safety procedures to complete scientific investigations

·       Formulate and identify questions to guide scientific investigations that connect to science concepts

·       Explain that equal volumes of different substances usually have different masses

·       Explain that multicellular organisms have a variety of specialized cells, tissues, organs and organ systems that perform specialized functions

·       Describe that chemical and physical changes occur all around us (e.g., in the human body, cooking, and industry)

 

SOCIAL STUDIES:

·       Describe the early development of humankind from prehistoric times

·       Compare the geographic, political, economic and social characteristics of river civilizations in the Tigris, Euphrates, Nile and Indus valleys before 1000 B.C.

·       Compare world religions focusing on geographic origins, founding leaders and teachings

·       Describe ways human settlement is influenced by environmental factors

 

ART:

·       Identify positive and negative space, as well as focal point

·       Draw in one-point perspective

·       Paint with tempera and watercolor

 

MUSIC:

·       Understand and use music reading skills and terms

·       Participate musically in the Liturgy

·       Study the role of liturgical and other sacred music and know how they have evolved

 

HEALTH:

·       Understand measures to take to prevent the spread of germs

·       Classify diseases as communicable, non-communicable, or congenital

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

·       Develop social and emotional skills of team play, positive social interaction, problem solving, acceptable display of emotion, and responsibility

·       Understand the importance of safety considerations when taking part in physical activities

 

TECHNOLOGY BENCHMARKS:

·       Demonstrate ethical and legal behaviors when using technology

·       Develop keyboarding skills with proper techniques

·       Understand a variety of communication tools

·       Use the Internet for research

·       Evaluate the accuracy, appropriateness, and bias of resources found on the Internet
