our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. We are one human family. Our Catholic tradition instructs us to put the needs of the
poor and vulnerable first.”

DIOCESAN LENTEN PROJECT 2003
This year our Lenten project combines the two Catholic Social Teaching principles of “Option for the Poor and Vulnerable” and “Solidarity.” Sr. Mary Margaret Pachucki, OP, former school consultant for Catholic Youth and School Services, has offered the Catholic schools of our diocese the opportunity to help two struggling schools in South Africa. Sr. Mary Margaret currently is on the staff of the Catholic Institute of Education established by the South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference to support and assist Catholic teachers and schools across the country, particularly those in disadvantaged communities.
The schools Sr. Mary Margaret has recommended to us are Nkosiyetu (Christ Child in Zulu) School and Maris Stella School. Both are located in impoverished rural areas in Zululand. These are comparatively new schools as it is only since the end of Apartheid that the government has allowed Black children to attend school.
