FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT…

The format of our “new” Principals’ Bulletin continues to evolve.  At the top of this page you will find helpful links for additional information.  Please click on the links on a regular basis, especially for upcoming events, professional development opportunities, etc.  Also, from time to time we will have flyers, registration forms, and supplemental information that will be referenced in the Bulletin.  The links above (or ones provided in the Bulletin article itself) will take you to the proper page on our web site where you will find the necessary information.  For now, some additional information is also included with this e-mail as attachments.  Eventually, we will do away with most e-mail attachments to the Bulletin.  Instead, most additional information will be put on our website (accessed through the above links) where it will be archived for future reference.

We will continue the monthly Teachers’ Bulletin in the same format as described above.  The Teachers’ Bulletin will normally come to Principals by e-mail on the second Friday of each month.  (Look for the first one on September 14.)  We will ask Principals to forward it to the teachers.  Eventually, we hope to have the e-mail addresses of all of our teachers. We will then e-mail the Teachers’ Bulletin directly to them.

FORMS DUE:

A reminder:  The “Fifth Day” Enrollment information is due immediately after your fifth day in session.  Also, the “Scantron Training Registration” information is now due.  As noted at the Leadership Institute, most of the forms due to CYSS and to the state are now organized for Principals on our webpage (http://www.cyss.org/forms/formsdue.html)  Questions, contact Shari Beier at CYSS.

PRINCIPALS’ INSTITUTE REGISTRATION FORM:

Our Principals’ Institute is scheduled for October 25 and 26 at Sawmill Creek in Huron.  Click on the link: http://www.cyss.org/forms/regform07.html   Complete the registration form and submit by September 7.

ASP ALLOCATION:

The first ASP payment was sent to your local public school districts this past week.  There are three payments.  The first two payments are based on an estimated per pupil allocation of $636.78 x 25%.  The final payment in February will be adjusted based on this year’s nonpublic ADM.  Assuming that the nonpublic enrollment count will drop, the final per pupil allocation should be higher than the above amount.

SCANTRON  - FAQ’s & ANSWERS:

1)  What do I put on the Price Proposal Form section that says “Tax” and “Ground Shipping Costs?”

Answer:  Nothing.  You are tax exempt and you are not purchasing any materials that need to be shipped.

2)  Price Proposal Form!?  Where do I find that?

Answer:  http://www.cyss.org/forms/ScantronOrderForm.pdf

3)  What should I do about the line that says “Skills Connection Online for use with Performance Series?”

Answer:  Nothing.  This is a feature that schools are receiving but at no cost.

4)  To whom do I send copies of the Price Proposal Form?

Answer:  If you are purchasing your testing services with ASP funds you need to send three copies of the Price Proposal Form – 1) to your local public school district with a Purchase Order; 2) to the Scantron Company indicating on the bottom of the form that you have sent a PO to your local public school district for payment (address on the bottom of the Price Proposal – DO NOT SEND A COPY OF PURCHASE ORDER TO SCANTRON!); 3) to Carolyn Schmidbauer at CYSS.

If your school is paying for testing services then you need to send a copy of the Price Proposal to 1) to the Scantron Company (address on the bottom of the Price Proposal) indicating that you wish to be invoiced and will be paying for the testing services yourself; 2)  Carolyn Schmidbauer at CYSS.

5)  What number of students should I put in the Qty. box?

Students in Grades 3-7 should be put here.  Add the number of your 8th grade students in the count if you have decided to include them also.  In the spring you will have the option of including second graders for testing and the cost for them will be prorated at that time.

6)  How do I register for the In-Service Trainings?

Go to http://www.cyss.org/onlineforms/ScantronTrainRegistration.html to register for trainings as soon as possible.  Sessions are filling up quickly.  You will be notified if we are not able to accommodate you in your first choice session.

7)  What if I am having trouble with my school database?

Answer:  Call Shari Beier or Tami Kwiatkowski at CYSS (419-244-6711) as soon as possible.  Student and teacher databases will be uploaded to Scantron next week so that In-service participants will be able to have access to data for training.

HOME SAFETY PLAN – LUCAS COUNTY:

Attached to this e-mail is an invitation for Lucas County schools (K-6) to participate in the “Great Escape”.  This is a county-wide program that encourages all families to have and practice a fire escape plan in their homes.  This information comes from The Fire and Burn Prevention Committee of Safe Kids Greater Toledo. The deadline for this request for information is Wednesday, September 5, 2007.  (See the attached fax sheet.)

EXPECTATIONS FORM:

The revised Expectations Form is now available in carbon copy print at the Catholic Center.  Please note further revisions were made on two of the bullets since the announcement of the “final revised” version mentioned in the August 24th Principals’ Bulletin article “Expectations Form Revised.”  The changes below were based on feedback from the Principals:

  1. Bullet #10 under “I will” now reads: I will use discretion if I must meet with a minor privately by using and office with a window, open door or by having another adult present.
  2. Bullet # 11 was under the “I will not” section and is now in the “I will” section and reads: I will use discretion if I must accompany a youth into a restroom or locker room and if possible I will ask another adult to be present.  This later replaces: I will not accompany youth into restrooms without another adult present.

We apologize for the numerous revisions and any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate your patience and cooperation in the implementation of this new document.

Please place your orders with Tami Kwiatkowski at: tkwiatkowski@toledodiocese.org  Orders will be sent out in the diocesan mail on the first available Wednesday.

When requesting your order for Expectations Forms, please indicate if you are willing to pick up your order in October during the Fall Principals’ Institute at Sawmill Creek.

If you have questions, please contact Frank DiLallo at the CYSS office or email him at:

INFOsearch:

INFOsearch is ready for use by Ohio's K-12 community.  INFOsearch permits simultaneous searching of multiple databases from INFOhio's Core Collection of Electronic Resources. Now, students, educators and parents have a new way to locate high quality information that supports Ohio's Academic Content Standards and many other topics of interest. There is no cost to use INFOsearch; it is free to Ohio's K-12 community and uses the same home access username and password that works for individual Core Collection searches.  Additional information can be found at http://www.infohio.org/

TEACHING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS:

Are you looking for good professional development resources for teachers to support the development of instructional strategies to be used to teach critical thinking skills?  CYSS has purchased an ASCD Professional Development tool called “Learning to Think…Thinking to Learn” which contains a CD and User Guide that could be used by faculties to help them when implementing their school’s improvement plan; helping students dig deeper and develop skills to help them become better thinkers; as well as provide teachers with a rationale as to why teaching thinking skills through content is critical.  The Users Guide can be used with an individual teacher, a small group, or whole faculty.  If a principal is interested in borrowing this resource, call Carolyn Schmidbauer at CYSS.

CYO FALL SPORTS MASS:

The 2007 CYO Fall Sports Mass will take place on Wednesday, September 5th at 6:30pm at Rosary Cathedral in Toledo.  Bishop Blair will preside at the liturgy.  All metro Toledo 7th and 8th grade CYO coaches and athletes are expected to attend.

“EARTH EXPO”:

Lourdes College in Sylvania is sponsoring a “Mini-Earth Expo” to highlight what businesses, schools, and other organizations are doing to address concerns that affect our air, water, and soil quality.  Schools are asked to participate by setting up exhibits showing school/class efforts to conserve natural resources.  Schools will receive a flyer and participation details in next Wednesday’s regular mail.
