FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT…

As mentioned in the September 7 Principals’ Bulletin, the long-range planning process started at the November, 2005 Catholic Schools Summit has been ongoing and has also been evolving.  The core foundations (Mission and Vision Statements) that were developed in November, 2005 still remain in place.  They are:

Mission Statement

“Through Christ, we come together as a Catholic community to immerse

our students in profound, holy learning that calls them as Disciples of

Christ to embrace the Kingdom of God, thereby transforming the world”

Vision Statement

“A Catholic school is the preferred choice for all Catholic

families and others who embrace our mission.”

However, the planning process has evolved to meet local needs.  Attached to this Bulletin is an Excel spreadsheet.  This spreadsheet will show a flow chart that illustrates how the long-range planning process generally works.  Specifically, we see the roles and responsibilities of the “Change Team” a bit differently.  Hopefully, this will present a more realistic role for that group to play.  (Note: we are suggesting that a new name for this group is needed.  The attached flow chart refers to this group as the “Collaboration Team” which indicates its role.)  CYSS would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERS:

In case you missed the e-mail sent out earlier in the week, Ann Sardeson faces another surgery on her leg this coming Monday.  Please remember her in your prayers.

FINANCIAL PLANNING WORKSHOPS:

CYSS will be offering FREE financial planning workshops in the Metro-Toledo area to help parents plan, save, and afford their child’s education from Catholic elementary school through college.

The workshops will be held on Monday, September 24th and Wednesday, September 26th from 7:00 -8:00 pm at Little Flower School in Toledo.

Mr. Bill Harris, a Financial Advisor with Informative Financial Services and a registered representative with Mutual Services Corporation will present the workshops free of charge.

A half page and a full page flyer is available that can be sent home with your students.  We can send you the exact number of copies you need, or we can email you the electronic version to print yourselves. All you have to do is let us know which version you prefer and we will send them to you.  The contact person is Colleen Buckman at cbuckman@toledodiocese.org or call her at 419-244-6711 x. 149

We’d also like to encourage the schools in the Metro-Toledo area to sign-up a “Schools Fair” that will take place from 6:30 to 7 pm and 8-8:30 pm just before and after the workshops. This is free of charge, and your chance to recruit for your school, but you need to reserve table space.

Please consider signing up for this great opportunity to meet with parents who already send their children to Catholic schools or are planning to in the future. If you personally cannot attend, please pass this information along to and encourage a representative from your school to attend the Fair.   If interested, contact Colleen Buckman at the above e-mail address and phone number.

We would like to offer financial planning workshops in all regions of the diocese.  If you know of a financial planner who may be willing to present at a workshop in your region, let Colleen know.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (ELEMENTARY & HIGH SCHOOL):

The following information was sent to CYSS by the Catholic Conference of Ohio:

Elementary Schools: HB119 (budget bill, signed into law) requires each school in Ohio (including ours) to report to ODE, by Oct. 31,  the number of minutes per week and the number of classes per week of physical education provided to students in each of grades K to 8 in 2006-2007 and scheduled to be provided to students in 2007/2008.  Directions from ODE are forthcoming.

High Schools: Retained in law for 2007/2008 (from SB311) is the permission (not mandate) for dioceses or schools to adopt a policy to excuse from the high school physical education requirement each student who, during high school, has participated in interscholastic athletics, marching band, or cheerleading for at least 2 full seasons.

All schools (K-12):  HB119 also requires that no later than December 31, 2007, the State Board will adopt physical education standards for grades K-12.  However, our schools will not be required to implement these standards.

LOCKDOWN DRILL:

See the attached document for this 2007-08 school year Lockdown Drill requirements and guidelines.  For further information please contact Frank DiLallo at the CYSS Office.

EXPECTATIONS FORM:

The Expectations Form must be signed by employees and volunteers who have contact with youth only.  This includes all Medium and High Responsibility employees and volunteers.  There is no Diocesan requirement for this form to be signed by employees and volunteers who have no contact with youth (Low Responsibility).  If you have any questions, please contact Frank DiLallo, Diocesan Case Manager.

TEACHERS’ BULLETIN:

The Teachers’ Bulletin will again be sent out monthly.  It will follow the same format as the Principals’ Bulletin.  At this time, CYSS does not have e-mail addresses for all the teachers in the diocese.  So, the Teachers’ Bulletin will be sent to Principals.  We ask Principals to forward it to teachers or make copies for them.  The first edition will be e-mailed today.
