EdChoice Scholarship Program:  Those schools that have been part of this program last year and this year are very aware of the many details!  But for those schools that are not involved…  This is the state-wide voucher program.  Students in poor performing public schools are able to apply for a scholarship (voucher) to attend a non-public school.  Public schools that meet the “poor performing” criteria are located in Lima, Mansfield, Sandusky, and Toledo.  So our schools in those areas have students who have received vouchers through the “EdChoice Scholarship Program”.  The numbers for our diocese are:

                                                                                    2006-07           2007-08

“EdChoice students” in Catholic elementary schools:           250                  642

“EdChoice students” in Catholic high schools:                       74                  208

                                                            Totals:                   324                  850

Some demographic information about families from the U. S. Census Bureau:

The percentage of households headed by single parents showed little variation from 1994 through 2006, at about 9%, up from 5% in 1970, according to the US Census Bureau.  Highlights from “Families and Living Arrangements:  2006,” are as follows:

  • 12.9 million one-parent families; 10.4 million single-mother families and 2.5 million single-father families
  • 67% of the nation’s 73.7 million children younger than 18 lived with two married parents in 2006
  • 5.8 million stay-at-home parents; 5.6 million mothers and 159,000 fathers
  • Average household size: 2.57 people, down from 3.14 in 1970
  • 26% of households consisted of a person living alone in 2006, up from 17% in 1970
  • 8% of the total number of children lived in a household that included a grandparent in 2006.  The majority of these children (3.7 million) lived in the grandparent’s home, and of these, about 60% had a parent present
  • Among the 13 million children 15 to 17, about 2.3 million were working, and of these, 2.2 million worked part-time
  • 33% of males and 26% of females 15 and older had never married, up from 28% and 22% in 1970
  • The majority of men and women in 2006 had been married by the time they were 30 to 34 (71%) and among men and women 65 and older, 96% had been married

FINANCIAL SURVEY (ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS):

The NCEA Department of Elementary Schools has entered into an agreement with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University to gather data for “Financing the Mission”, a survey of Catholic elementary schools.  This is the biannual study conducted by the elementary department of NCEA.  The results were previously published as the “Balance Sheet”.  The survey provides NCEA with financial data regarding tuition, salaries, per pupil costs and other pertinent financial information to share with dioceses throughout the country.

With CARA's technology, this is the first time that the survey will be conducted online.  It is also the first time that it has been sent to every Catholic elementary school in the country.  In the past, NCEA did only random sampling.

Please be aware that every elementary principal in our diocese will receive a letter in the mail with an ID and Password.  The ID and Password must be used to access the survey. The NCEA made this survey as simple and user-friendly as possible.  Principals do not need to complete it in one sitting.  Using the ID and Password you can return to the survey as many times as you wish.

Principals are encouraged to complete this survey.  The information provided will be of great benefit to all of our colleagues in Catholic education.
