FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT…

Advent Waiting

You, O God, Ancient of Days, call us to wait.

To wait with joyful hope and expectant hearts

For the once-again birth of Emmanuel, God-with-us.

In the exhilaration and stress, celebration and mess of this season, help us wait.

Even in the midst of busy preparation, help us wait.

Nothing is as important as waiting for you.

Waiting is not nothing; it is hard work.

It is tempting to do, rather than be, but this is not what you desire.

You, O God, desire us: our presence, our poverty, our prayer, our praise.

Help us wait until your quiet peace fills our souls,

Until we become the embodiment of your Presence;

So that this world, broken and beautiful in equal measure

Is transformed by the grace that you pour out

Through our Advent acts of generosity, kindness and love.

We ask this in the name of Jesus, Light of the World. Amen.

Registration for the convention and for hotels is now available online.  Go to: http://www.ncea.org/events/ConventionExposition.asp

E-RATE:

This is a reminder if you have not already done so to file the Form 470 to begin the application process for school year 2008-09.  Since the filing window for the Form 471 closes on February 7, counting back 28 days, the deadline for the Form 470 would be on or about January 10.

STANDARDS FOR OHIO EDUCATORS BOOKS:

It is our understanding that schools received a delivery of “Standards for Ohio Educators” books from the Ohio Department of Education this week.  Some of you have called to find out what to do with them.  The Standards were written to help guide and set benchmarks for educators in the State of Ohio in order to ensure quality education.  While this book is written for the public school educator, it contains helpful suggestions and does reflect the philosophy that we are asking principals and teachers to use when looking at Professional Development and Teacher Evaluations.  For the present, we ask that you take a look through the book and possibly share the book with your leadership team if you have one, and we will be discussing how we will be using this tool to support instruction in the Diocese of Toledo at our January Regional Principal Meetings.

SCANTRON TRAINING HELPS:

Schools may want to refer teachers to a link on the “Documents” page on the Scantron Performance Series website called PS eLearning Courses: Overview & Creating Targeted Instruction (this is the third link down on the documents page).  The modules are designed to help teachers review the various reports, their purpose and how to get to them along with some suggestions of how they can use this information in their classroom.

SCANTRON AND NETREKKER TEACHER IN-SERVICE:

All schools have been asked to hold in-service training for their teachers by mid-January on how to read and begin using the student data generated from the Math and Reading tests from October. Also schools were given a preview of an online search engine called NetTrekker that partners with Scantron to support targeted instruction for students. NetTrekker is a subscription based product and Shari Beier has secured a trial window during which teachers can go in the website and explore.

As a further follow-up to training you received at your school, Teacher in-services will be held on January 15, at Defiance Catholic School, St. John Campus, January 16; at St. Pat’s of Heatherdowns Holy Family Center; and January 17 at Bellevue, Immaculate Conception, from 3:45 – 5:30 The purpose of these in-services will be to share information about NetTrekker, allow teachers to ask more specific questions about the Scantron data and most importantly provide teachers time to share what they are doing with the data they are able to access with this test.  Because this in-service is meant to be a “next steps” in-service it is very important that anyone who wishes to attend is familiar with the Scantron Performance Series website; has a basic understanding of the student data; and has looked at the “Student Learning Objectives” for individual students and their class.  Registration will soon be online and is first come first serve.

TECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM:

Technology Integration for Educators and Schools (TIES) Symposium:

WGTE in Toledo, will be offering the TIES Symposium on January 12, 2008 (9am-3pm).  TIES will provide high-quality education and networking opportunities for educators. Sessions at the Winter Symposium will allow participating teachers not only to hear and see how the presenting teacher has implemented the technology in their own classroom, but also to work directly with the technology.   Learn about cutting-edge classroom technologies.  Catch up with the technology your students are using.  Find ways to incorporate the technology you use everyday into your lesson plans.  Additional information and an online registration form can be found at http://www.wgte.org/education/

SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDER (SPD):

Attached to this Bulletin is information from Mary Immaculate School in Toledo about Sensory Processing Disorder.  SPD is a brain disorder that affects developing children and adults. Those impacted by SPD misinterpret everyday sensory information (sound, touch and movement.)  The article will also be put in the Teachers’ Bulletin in January.
